Senior Citizens Picnic 2012

DSCN2401_picnic_1

Sunday 13th May at 9am 5 coaches left Hornsea and surrounding Villages for our annual Picnic. This year we did something a little different as a direct result of an on the bus survey ..last year. At about 10:30 we arrived at our first stop, a visit to Eden Camp. A Top Yorkshire Tourist attraction. Where of our group of nearly 240 enjoyed a trip down memory lane and the nostalgia of the second world war...and enjoying a picnic lunch either in the mess halls or out in the open at the picnic benches and tables.Under the wings of a doodle-bug and sounds of an air-raid.Bit of a chilly day but nice in the sun and NO Rain!!! Many were entertained in the Music Hall Hut with a bit of a sing-a long conducted by the Puppets on stage.Others the bowls of a U-Boat reminded them of the dark days of the war, whilst the "Land Girls" amongst us remembered the fun of hay making! We left Eden Camp about 13:45 and headed off, for a stop over at Thornton-Le-Dale (always a favourite destination) for afternoon Tea and Cakes, Icecream or naughty Home-made Chocolates, before winding our way back home. A game of Bingo on the way out and way back, a Raffle, and Picnic Lunch ,and Lions with their unique brand of Entertainment. All for the princely booking Fee of £2
Here a Group from Coach A at Thornton-Le-Dale.

Lion Brian Rowson is a member of Stowmarket Lions Club. He has set out on 2000mile cycle ride around the coast of England to raise money for the British Heart Foundation “Mending a Broken Heart” Appeal.Brian himself, has a  blockage reducing his hearts capacity by 15% but doctors have assured him that he is fit enough to make the journey. He set off on the journey on the day of his 75th (YES 75th) birthday. On the 12th April from Felixstowe. He expects to cover about 50 miles a day (he did 75 on Wednesday in the pouring rain!) After Hornsea, his route will take him to Scarborough and then onto Berwick -on-Tweed.He will then go across the country in a line with Hadrians Wall to the west coast, then head south via Preston, Liverpool, Shrewsbury, Chepstow, Bristol and Ilfracombe and then along the south coast before turning north and heading back to Stowmarket.
Brian, who has cycled all over Britain around Ireland, in America and eight western European countries in the past 18 years said,. "Because of the heart problems I have, I was keen to support the BHF's Mending Broken Hearts campaign to fund research into the regeneration of human heart cells.
I see 2012 as probably the last year to "do it while I can" a dictum for all senior citizens. Not to ride for charity would be selfish and a wasted opportunity"
President Mel Watson said" Hornsea Lions had no hesitation in supporting a fellow Lion in attempting such a feat. We were more than pleased to contribute £1000 towards his charity."
