ABOUT US
The Lions worldwide are a totally voluntary organisation who work to raise funds for charitable support in the local community and for special projects or disaster relief around the world. Without question, for Hornsea District Lions, our main source of fund raising is the "LIONS CHARITY SHOP" located in Newbegin in Hornsea. This was comprehensively refurbished quite recently and as a result is more popular than ever. However, we do get out and about in the community to try to raise even more money. Examples of this are our Stall in the Park as part of the Town Carnival Weekend. We usually operate a few different games and a “Tombola Stall” to win a cuddly lion and this year we had a very successful side stall selling books and videos. We always appear in Newbegin to support the BBC Children in Need Appeal. Our very own Pudsey Bear is in attendance and there is a great atmosphere, The local passers by are very generous and each year we collect about £600 and donate a grand total of £1000. LIGHTS NIGHT is one of the highlights of the Hornsea Social Calender with all the shops in the main street taking part. Therefore, we are more than pleased and proud to be a part of the festivities. We erect a stall outside the Lions Shop where we set up our Lions Cuddly Toys Tombola. Free refreshment in the form of Tea, Coffee and Soup are provided for everyone. The shop stays open until late and we are fortunate enough to secure the services of no less a person than Father Christmas himself (we book very early). He hands out free gifts, sweets and oranges or tangerines to any child that is willing to stand in the line, and it can be a long queue! While the evening does raise some money from the Tombola and Shop takings, the important thing is that we are pleased to give something back to the people of the community that support us so tremendously throughout the year. For this reason, in 2010 we started an annual Brass in the Park event in July for all residents and Lions from other clubs in our Zone to enjoy, and an annual Xmas Sale in November with hundreds of bargains to help the festive season along.
End of June 2011- TOTALLED £59170-00 Which has bettered last years figure of £49,400. THE MINIBUS PURCHASED FOR LOCAL USE BY THE COMMUNITY AT A COST OF £10,664.13 IN 2007 CONTINUES AS A VALUABLE ASSET.
We would also like all churches, fund raisers and charitable institutions in the Hornsea District to know that they can ask the Hornsea District Lions to donate boxes of bric-a-brac, etc. etc. for fund raising. Just ask the Lion President.
